What I’ve Learned from Coaching 200+ Entrepreneurs Across 24 Industries

Eight Years Is Long Enough to See the Pattern

When I started coaching, I thought I was going to be helping practitioners with their businesses. And I do. But what I learned quickly — and what eight years has made impossible to deny — is that the business is almost never the actual subject of the work.

The business is the mirror. What shows up in the business — the ceiling, the cycle, the pattern that recurs regardless of what changes — is always a reflection of something happening inside the person running it.

After more than two hundred clients across twenty-four different industries, the pattern is consistent. Here is what I have actually learned.

The Most Surprising Thing I Discovered

The most surprising thing I have learned in eight years of coaching is this: intelligence has almost no correlation with the ability to break through a ceiling.

I have worked with some of the sharpest minds I have ever encountered — people who can analyze a business situation with exceptional clarity, who understand the concepts immediately, who can articulate exactly what needs to change. And they stay stuck anyway.

And I have worked with people who break through ceilings that have held for years and keep growing.

The difference is never intelligence. It is always willingness — specifically, the willingness to be wrong about the story they have been telling about why they are stuck.

What the Clients Who Plateau Have in Common

The clients who plateau — who make progress and then slide back, or who work hard without producing the results that match their effort — almost always have one thing in common: they are looking for a change in the external environment rather than a change in themselves.

They want better marketing. Better systems. Better team members. Better timing. And I understand this impulse — external variables are easier to see and feel more controllable.

But in eight years, I have not seen an external change produce a sustained breakthrough when the internal identity had not shifted to support it. The plateau is always identity enforcing homeostasis. Always.

What the Breakthrough Clients Have in Common

The breakthrough clients — the 138% single-month growth, the 55% revenue increase after 15 years at the same ceiling, the startup that reached $10k/month in under five months — have a different profile.

They are willing to look at the uncomfortable thing. When I point to something internal — a belief, an identity pattern, an emotional response — they do not defend it. They get curious about it.

That willingness — more than any skill, any market, any strategy — is the most reliable predictor of breakthrough I have found.

The Thing I Wish I Had Said More in Year One

If I could go back to the first year of coaching and add one thing to every initial consultation, it would be this: the problem you think you have is probably not the problem you actually have.

Not because clients are wrong about their situation. They are usually accurate observers of the symptoms. But the diagnosis of cause is almost always off. The marketing is not the problem. The systems are not the problem.

The problem is almost always: there is a program running inside you that is producing these results, and until that program changes, the results will not change in a sustained way.

That is not a discouraging statement. It is a liberating one. Because programs can change.

The Breakthrough Clarity Call is the conversation I described above — a real, honest assessment of what is actually in the way and whether working together makes sense. Twenty minutes. Free. No pitch.
