Is Your Money Block a Mindset Problem or an Identity Problem? Here’s How to Tell

Why the Distinction Matters More Than You Think

There is a moment in almost every money conversation I have with clients where I ask a question they have not been asked before: Is this a thinking problem or a being problem?

Most people instinctively answer: thinking. Because that is where the personal development conversation usually lives. Change your thoughts about money. Affirm abundance. Reframe scarcity thinking.

And yes — thoughts matter. But the category error most people make is assuming that a money ceiling is primarily a cognitive problem. Something that can be resolved by thinking differently. In my experience, consistently, across more than two hundred clients — that assumption is almost always wrong.

Money ceilings are identity problems. And identity is not a thinking problem. It is a being problem. The solution is categorically different.

What a Mindset Problem Looks Like

A genuine money mindset problem is a surface-level thought pattern that can be identified, challenged, and replaced without deep identity work. When you point out the issue, the person can update the belief. They try new things. The behavior changes. The results shift.

Mindset work works on mindset problems. The issue is that most money ceilings are not mindset problems. They are identity problems wearing the costume of a mindset problem.

What an Identity Problem Looks Like

An identity money block does not respond to thought-challenging. You can identify it precisely. You can articulate why it is irrational. You can agree with every logical argument against it. And then you can go out and recreate the same result anyway.

The signature of an identity problem is the gap between knowing and doing. The person knows they should raise their prices. They agree they are undercharging. They make the decision to change. And then something happens. The conversation gets uncomfortable and they discount. The client pushes back and they cave.

This is not weak will. This is the nervous system enforcing the identity set-point. The subconscious says: I am not someone who charges that much. And it is far more powerful than the conscious decision to charge more.

Five Questions That Reveal Which One You Are Dealing With

Sit with these questions honestly:

  • Have you known what you should charge for more than six months without actually charging it consistently?
  • Do you feel physical discomfort — tightness, anxiety, resistance — when you state your full price?
  • Have you implemented money mindset practices without sustained results?
  • Do you find ways to discount or justify lower pricing even when you resolved not to?
  • Does the idea of doubling your income feel exciting in theory but impossible in practice?

If you answered yes to three or more of these, what you are dealing with is identity — not mindset. And that changes what the work is.

The Path Through an Identity Block

Identity work is slower than mindset work. It requires going beneath the thought to the emotional and somatic layer where the identity actually lives. It requires creating the felt experience of being someone who commands and receives a different financial reality — not just thinking about it.

For most practitioners, the money story comes from childhood observation of how the adults around them related to financial abundance. For many healthcare providers, there is a deep conflict between service and money — a subconscious belief that healing work should not be expensive.

That belief did not come from logic. It came from somewhere specific. And the only way to update it is to go back to where it came from and change it at the root.

The financial results follow that change reliably. Not immediately — but they hold. Because the subconscious is no longer enforcing the old ceiling.
